Book Review

Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte

Okay so this is my favourite book and I am really excited to share its review.

What the book is about?

This book tells the life story of a girl, Jane Eyre, in first person. The story can be divided into four parts. It starts with her childhood of being emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins, then her gaining education and becoming a better person at Lowood institution after which she starts her job at Thornfield as a governess, that’s the place where her life changes completely. After that she spends some time with Rivers and gets to know so much about herself. And finally the novel ends with a happy ending.

My opinion:- From the summary, this novel might sound all boring and common but it’s actually the opposite. Jane Eyre is a character that, I think, every girl can relate to in one way or the other, even though it was published way back in 1847. The story is so beautifully written that it catches your interest right from the beginning. Honestly, I am not a fan of classic novels and yet this is my favourite book. I think that says a lot.

One thing that I really liked about the book from the very start is that Jane is not a clichéd beautiful, rich girl. She is not pretty, she is an orphan and she’s definitely not rich. The character that Jane has makes you her fan. She is bold, independent, honest and self-respecting. She has her principles that she stands by no matter how hard the situation is. She doesn’t want to be anyone’s shadow or live like someone’s possession; she wants to have her own standing and be an equal. In a lot of ways you can see a modern woman in Jane.

The story will make you smile, laugh and cry. It has an element of suspense in it too. It has unexpected twists and turns. This book is a full package. And as I already mentioned that this is a classic, the language is easy to understand, which is usually not the case with classics because they are written so long ago and it becomes a little hard to get the grasp of language.

Just read this book okay! It is the best. You have to read this book, especially if you are a girl. The way the life of Jane Eyre is presented to you is so heart-touching. When you are reading the book it feels like you are actually talking to a person and that Jane is your friend. It’s a must read.

Favourite quote:- “Where there is energy to command well enough, obedience never fails.”

My Art

Free Birds (My Drawing)

I really like birds. They give you calm and peace. But what we do wrong is we cage them and limit them and pretend that we love them. The real love would be to set them free and let them spread their wings where they are mean to be, in the endless sky!

This is a drawing made by me of such free birds. Do you like it?

Book Review

The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini

What the story is about?

I think the story is about guilt. The protagonist of the story, Amir; a rich high caste boy, is carrying this burden on his chest for all those years and one day, he just couldn’t bear it anymore and decides to make amends. But guess what, it’s too late for that. Still, he tries to do the right thing now because he has to be free from that guilt. He wants to redeem himself in any case.

The story also has another main character; Hassan, Amir’s best friend when he was a kid. Hassan is a low caste servant’s son who works for Amir’s father. The way their bond goes along with the story is so heart-warming as well as heart breaking.

The story takes you to the whole journey from their childhood to the present in a beautiful way.

My Opinion:- Let me talk the technical aspects first; the story is really good plus Khaled Hosseini is such a great story teller that you can literally see a movie going on in front of your eyes. That’s the power his writing has. You can actually imagine all the faces of the characters by the description he has given. The twists and turns the story has, will literally make your jaw drop, Hosseini drops them like bombs when you least expect them.

The book also shows social and political aspects. There is child molestation, caste-discrimination, political riots, unrest etc.

Now let’s talk about the emotional part; You will cry!!! I think that explains enough. It’s like Khaled Hosseini knows how to play with your emotions and he just triggers the right part.

If you haven’t read this book already, read it now! It’s a beautiful book. I think this was the book which actually made me fall in love with reading. This is a must read book.

Book Review

The Secret of the Old Clock-Carolyn Keene

Who hasn’t heard of Nancy Drew? Whenever we see a female detective, Nancy Drew’s name just pops up. This book is the first of Nancy Drew series.

Storyline: Nancy Drew is keen minded, compassionate, warm-hearted, brave, adventurous and intelligent 16-year-old girl. She has put herself to the mission of finding the missing will of Mr. Crowley to help Turners. The whole book is about her collecting clues and facing dangerous situations but never giving up.

My opinion: This is a good book. It’s not too high on drama neither does it lack it. This was my first mystery book and I really liked it. I personally love mystery and thriller genres and I was satisfied with the amount of it this book had. At some points Nancy is just doing mundane stuff but at others, she is running to save her life and this mix make the book a good and satisfying read.  The pace of the story is slow and steady and it keeps you engaged.

I will totally recommend this book, especially for kids. The language is easy to understand and story easy to follow. You will have fun reading this book.

Till the Last Breath – Durjoy Datta

Yes, another one by Durjoy Datta.

Storyline:- there are 4 characters all of who start separately but eventually get together with the story and their lives change forever after that.

Dushyant is an alcoholic and an addict. Pihu is one of the most intelligent and brilliant minds. They both are brought together in the room no. 509 of GKL hospital but wait, there is no love story between them. It starts with the entry of Dr. Arman Kashyap, who is going to treat Pihu and will have to make some big decisions, and Zarah, who will be Dushyant’s doctor and is herself struggling with her past.

My opinion: I loved this book! Even though I did not have a very good experience with Durjoy Dutta’s World’s best boyfriend, I gave this one a try and I am so glad I did. This book is not just a bubbly love story of college students, it is so much more; emotions, struggle, tough decisions, sacrifices and what not. I can personally relate to this book on some aspects so my opinion can be a little biased.

This book shows you how hard life can be but you still have to keep smiling and keep a positive attitude.

I think everyone should read this book as it gives you a new perspective to life and the story is just so good. Trust me, this book will leave you in tears.

World’s Best Boyfriend – Durjoy Datta

Since this is the first book I ever read so why not start with it.

Why did I choose this book:- I was just starting to read novels and I wanted to start with something easy and straightforward. Plus choosing an Indian writer made sure that I wouldn’t have any problem in understanding the culture and language wouldn’t be a barrier either.

What the books is about:- this book revolves around two main characters  , Dhruv and Aranya, who have a love-hate relationship. They want to hurt each other the most and yet can’t stay away from each other. Aranya is smart and intelligent while Dhruv is rude and arrogant.  Somewhere deep inside they know they love each other but they are constantly fighting their feelings.

You will understand the storyline better if you have ever heard of or watched the show ‘Sadda Haq’ on channel V (it’s been off-air since so long) minus the women empowerment factor. The relationship mentioned is literally the same.

My opinion:- As I mentioned earlier, this was my first book so I wasn’t expecting anything. I somewhat liked the story at that time but it was quite unbelievable. Even though the story is largely based upon college life, an average college goer cannot relate to it.

Now if I think about it, I guess I enjoyed the first half of the story but afterwards I was merely finishing the book for the sake of it.

Likes- Aranya has vitiligo and I like the way Durjoy Dutta has shown the problems she had to face and how it wasn’t a factor for her anymore.

The love-hate relationship between Dhruv and Aranya does seem interesting sometimes.

There are several twists in the story that can intrigue your interest.

Dislikes- A lot of things seemed repetitive as the story went on.

You lose interest as it progresses; it starts to get a little boring.

I felt that the ending was too cliché.

Not at all based on how Indian college life really is.

Overall, I don’t hate the book. If you are also starting a reading habit like I was you can go for it, but if you are a regular reader and have read some real good literature, I don’t think you’re gonna wanna read it. I will only recommend it if you are in that phase when you like romantic stories and like to fantasize about all that.
