The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck – Mark Manson

đź“ŤGenre- Self-Help, Non-Fiction

📍Recommendation- Should Read🧡

🔆What the book is about?

This book deals with various aspects of life when we think too much or give too much importance to things we don’t need to, in short, deciding what to give a fuck about and what not to. The book talks about struggles, problems, life lessons and a lot of relatable stuff.

🔆My Opinion- The very first thing that made me like the book’s savageness was the contents page. It was so negatively written, I loved it! (sounds crazy but trust me it’s funny).

I am not very much into non-fiction, although I am starting to get a taste for it. So for a self help book I thought it would be pretty boring but I enjoyed this book very much and learned a lot. Mark talks about life in such a way, everyone can relate to it and it gives you such new perspectives towards life. I especially liked the part about struggles and problems and I think it’s gonna remain with me.

At a lot of points I didn’t agree with Mark and I think not being able to argue with a book about it kinda made me frustrated. Also, I felt like the book talks about repetitive things under different name heads. This made the book a little boring.

What made me give this book a Should Read and not a Can Read is the fact that it’s really funny and if not from the whole book, you will get some good life lessons from some parts.

❇️This book deserves a read. I believe you will learn at least one thing that you can apply in your life. Also, it’s funny. I like funny books.

Invisible – James Patterson and David Ellis

đź“ŤGenre- Psychological Thriller, Suspense

📍Recommendation- Must Read ♥️

🔆Storyline- Emmy Dockery works in FBI as a research analyst but has been suspended. Reason? Her twin sister, Marta, died in a house fire which was ruled as accidental. But Emmy can’t accept that. She’s sure that her sister was murdered, just like dozens of other people whose deaths were also ruled as accidental. What proof does she have? None! And so no-one believes her. But she knows that there is a serial killer out there and she takes it on herself to find him. How will she catch someone who nobody thinks even exist?

🔆My opinion- There is something about the books written in first person that gets me hooked. This is one such book. You read the book with the voice of Emmy and Graham (in some chapters).

The building of suspense, the flow of the story, the characters everything was just perfect. In thriller genre, psychological thrillers are my personal favourite and this one didn’t disappoint me, it kept me up at night to know what happened next. After every other chapter, I said to myself, “this is it, I’m gonna sleep after this”. But I just kept going.

The book is so good that it actually makes you breath heavy or make you jump with excitement throughout. The book only gives you a small peek through the reality and when you turn the page, the chapter ends there. I think it was a brilliant way to hype up the anticipation and letting the reader to not stop.

One more thing I loved is that the book also makes you laugh or smile at many points despite all the madness and tension going on. The story keeps you in its grip from the first word till the last, I mean it. There is not a single moment of boredom or when you want some part to be over soon because you’re not enjoying it. I didn’t think it was even possible.

❇️I recommend this book with all my heart. I loved it and I’m sure you will too. If I were to compare, I would say the book was somewhat like The Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins. If you liked that, this is the book you can’t afford to miss.

(the second part in this series “Unsolved” came out just a few weeks ago and I just can’t wait to get my hands on it.)

Author Special: Khaled Hosseini

I have always loved his writings. It has a power of having an impact on you that will last forever. His books make you think and give the message you will never forget. The way he writes, leaves you in such an emotional state that you need some time to cope with it. I mean it in a good way. His books are not just books they’re feelings you connect with. I never have enough words to review his books.

I know he is a well known author but this is just me showing my gratitude for his work. He is the only author I have given Must Read recommendations on my blog and 5 star rating on Goodreads for three consecutive books. It was his The Kite Runner that made me fall in love with reading.

About Khaled Hosseini

Khaled Hosseini was born in 1965 in Kabul, Afghanistan, where his father was an Afghani diplomat and his mother a teacher. In 1980, the family requested and were granted political asylum in the United States, and moved to San Jose, California. Educated as a doctor, Hosseini earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Santa Clara University and earned a medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. He was a practicing internist between 1996 and 2004, and became a full-time author after the success of his first book. His first novel, The Kite Runner, was an international bestseller sold in more than 70 countries and adapted into an award-nominated film. Currently a resident of northern California, Hosseini is a Goodwill Envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Despite being a wonderful writer and an amazing human being.

His Books

1. The Kite Runner (2003)

Movie? Yes (2007)

Amir is the son of a wealthy Kabul merchant, a member of the ruling caste of Pashtuns. Hassan, his servant and constant companion, is a Hazara, a despised and impoverished caste. Their uncommon bond is torn by Amir’s choice to abandon his friend amidst the increasing ethnic, religious, and political tensions of the dying years of the Afghan monarchy, wrenching them far apart. But so strong is the bond between the two boys that Amir journeys back to a distant world, to try to right past wrongs against the only true friend he ever had.

The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies.

2. A thousand Splendid Suns (2007)

Movie? No

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan’s last thirty years—from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding—that puts the violence, fear, hope, and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two generations of characters brought jarringly together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives—the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness—are inextricable from the history playing out around them.

3. And the mountains echoed (2013)

Movie? No

So, then. You want a story and I will tell you one…Afghanistan, 1952. Abdullah and his sister Pari live with their father and stepmother in the small village of Shadbagh. Their father, Saboor, is constantly in search of work and they struggle together through poverty and brutal winters. To Abdullah, Pari – as beautiful and sweet-natured as the fairy for which she was named – is everything. More like a parent than a brother, Abdullah will do anything for her, even trading his only pair of shoes for a feather for her treasured collection. Each night they sleep together in their cot, their heads touching, their limbs tangled. One day the siblings journey across the desert to Kabul with their father. Pari and Abdullah have no sense of the fate that awaits them there, for the event which unfolds will tear their lives apart; sometimes a finger must be cut to save the hand. Crossing generations and continents, moving from Kabul, to Paris, to San Francisco, to the Greek island of Tinos, with profound wisdom, depth, insight and compassion, Khaled Hosseini writes about the bonds that define us and shape our lives, the ways in which we help our loved ones in need, how the choices we make resonate through history and how we are often surprised by the people closest to us.

4. Sea Prayer (2018)

Movie? No

A short, powerful, illustrated book written by Khaled Hosseini in response to the current refugee crisis, Sea Prayer is composed in the form of a letter, from a father to his son, on the eve of their journey. Watching over his sleeping son, the father reflects on the dangerous sea-crossing that lies before them. It is also a vivid portrait of their life in Homs, Syria, before the war, and of that city’s swift transformation from a home into a deadly war zone.

Impelled to write this story by the haunting image of young Alan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian boy whose body washed upon the beach in Turkey in September 2015.

I have read the first three books by him but haven’t got the chance to read the fourth and the latest one yet but I’m sure it’s also as touching as the other three.

Here, I copied the summaries from Goodreads but I just feel this doesn’t quite capture the essence of the book so do click on the name heads and read my version of the summary and the review of these books.

books

Ten books that gave me life lessons.

Big or small, I have learned something from every book I have read. Since including the whole list here would be unfeasible I am enlisting the books that I think about from time to time.

1.Till the Last Breath-

I read this book back when I just started reading and the fact that I am including it in the list says a lot. I generally don’t like romance but in this particular book I got hooked to this character that I saw myself in and gained a lot of strength from her.

So my lesson from this book was to keep smiling no matter how bad the situation is. What matters is how you get something out of it anyway.

2. To kill a Mockingbird-

This book was kind of hard to read for me. It starts so abruptly that I had to read part one twice to get it (don’t judge me I was a newbie reader then).

What I learned is to not judge anyone. Yes, I’m saying that in reference to Boo Radley. I used to judge people a lot and I am not proud of it. Now, I don’t do it because I don’t know about their circumstances and I have no right. I am not saying that this book all of a sudden, magically changed me but it did play a part.

3. Number the Stars-

This book was such a cute story. It was just 156 pages long and the lesson it teaches you, stays with you. I loved reading this book and I feel  like this book hasn’t got the publicity it deserves.

This book taught me what courage is. Courage is not just being brave and not getting scared. It’s okay to be scared and courage is facing the situation anyway.

4. The Alchemist-

As much as I criticize this book, I also can’t deny the fact that the message sent by this book is one of the most beautiful.

This book taught me to keep following my dreams no matter how hard it may get on the way. It’s not the end result that matters, it’s the journey that shapes you.

5. A thousand Splendid Suns-

I was thinking of including the Kite Runner in the list but then I thought this one was more relatable for me that the other one (I like them both equally but I loved the women-centric approach in this one)

So through its two main characters, this book shows you how you sometimes need someone else to help you out of a situation. It is okay to be vulnerable and yet keep fighting. You have to take some hard decisions and it may break your heart but keep working for yourself is what pays off.

6. Rage of Angels-

I just love the way Sidney Sheldon empowers women through his books. You can always see a badass female protagonist and get inspired from her.

Jennifer Parker really taught me to keep working for what you believe in. Even if everything is going wrong with you, you have to believe in yourself and that you are good enough to reach where you want to be. Just don’t give up.

7. Tuesdays with morrie-

This book was pretty emotional. I just feel like a book that narrates the journey of ALS hits my emotional side really hard. But how you deal with it is something this book stands out for me.

(SPOILER ALERT!) There were so many things to learn from this book but what really had an impact on me was the living funeral thing. I mean, all our lives we hate people and when they die we, all of sudden, get so much love for them. The guy knew he was going to die, so why not hear good things about him while he can!

8. The Rosie Project-

This book always reminds of Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. If you have watched the show you must have seen the guy evolve and improve himself. This is pretty much the deal with this book.

The message here is to not give up on people and self-improvement. We all come across people who are hard to deal with but all they need is someone to believe in them and love them no matter what.

9. Jane Eyre-

Okay so this is my favourite book. I completely loved Jane and when I finished the book it felt so sad. All through the reading it felt like Jane is a real person and that she is my friend I talk to everyday.

I learned a lot from Jane in this book. She teaches you to not lose yourself for someone else no matter how much you love them. She teaches you to stand by your principles even if it means losing everything you have. Her character is something to learn form.

10. Elon Musk-

I have always admired Elon Musk for what he has achieved and the heights he has reached. He has generally been a source of inspiration for me to work for my dreams but when I read the book it gave me a whole new insight.

Elon Musk taught me to work as hard as you can. You have to lose yourself into something you are working for. We  see the pretty picture of his success but the books lets us into the failure side of his career as well. What worked for him throughout was that he never gave up even when he was on the verge of bankruptcy.

This is highly subjective what you get from a book and this was my observation and somethings that struck me. To read the reviews of these book just click on the name heads and you will be redirected.

Thanks for reading. I would love to hear what life lesson you got form a book so comment down. You can also connect with me on:

Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend – Crystal Hemmingway

đź“ŤGenre- Romantic Comedy
📍Recommendation- Should Read🧡
👉Publication Date- 16th July 2019

🔆Storyline-

Crystal’s life is going on perfect. She has a job, a fiancee, a beautiful apartment and is writing a book. Although the only tension in her life is her mother. She loves her and finds it really hard to say no to her, which is also creating problems in her relationship but she has a decided to limit interaction with her and she’s sure it’ll work out.

But then she loses her job, her fiancee, her apartment and, well, she’s pretty skeptical about her book too. Now she’s forced to live with the person she was trying to avoid, her lonely mother. It’s impossible now, to focus on her book or do anything for herself. So she comes up with a perfect plan; get an Android to be her Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend.

How far will she be able to pull this off? What will happen when her mother finds out? And what about her own love life?

🔆My Opinion-

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book is written so differently. It’s not just a regular story with a simple narration, this is a story narrated with texts, journal entries and emails. Yes, you read it right! I have never thought that a book written this way can be so much fun to read.

As I opened the book I was confused because I saw text messages, journal entries and emails. And I was like, “is this a story or what?”. So I was honestly a little skeptical if I am going to enjoy it or not. Turns out, I did. In fact, this whole setup gave the story a touch of suspense as well. After a text or an entry you don’t know what happened at a certain event (I can’t give spoilers) so for a few pages you are left there hanging and you’re dying with excitement to know what happened. But then a text conversation or something comes up and you feel relieved to know.

I started with the author’s note and it won me over right away. At that point I knew that I was going to enjoy her humor. Yes, it was a little confusing for me in the start to understand what’s happening because of the different format of writing but after a few pages I caught the rhythm and wasn’t able to put the book down.

You know there is so much additional short stories in this book? It’s like a book within a book. I mean,  crystal was writing a modern fairytale story in the book and it’s excerpts are also given. There’s one more story and I’m not gonna say anything about it because I want it to be a surprise when you read it…wink wink.

This book leaves all the judgement to you. It doesn’t impose on you how you should feel about a certain situation. You are free to determine it for yourself. I really liked this about it.

Apart from the fun part, the book is based upon mother-daughter relationship. The way it is depicted, everyone can relate to it on some level. It gives a message that mother and daughter is the purest relationship. No matter how much you fight, no matter how much you try to avoid each other, the love and care always remains.

❇️This book was a fun read. I enjoyed it so much and I recommend everyone to read it. It comes out on 16th July 2019. Make sure to grab it as soon as it comes out.

The Testament – John Grisham

đź“ŤGenre- Legal Thriller
đź“ŤRecommendation- Can Readđź’›

🔆Storyline

Troy Phelan, a self made multi-billionaire, is plotting something and looking for a way to die. He is about to start the biggest war of lawyers, each one wanting the biggest piece of the pie.

Nate O’Riley, a wonderful litigator, is just coming out of his fourth rehab stay. He is filing for bankruptcy and doesn’t know when he might crash again but this time a great yet dangerous adventure is waiting for him. He has no idea that this adventure is going to change him forever.

🔆My Opinion

The first chapter was fun. Then it just went downhill from there. I mean there is so much drama and tension but I just didn’t enjoy it. This was my first legal thriller and I did not know what to expect but I do know that I wasn’t very happy reading it. After that first chapter, I was expecting for things to get hyped up and I actually waited so patiently for it but it just wasn’t very good.

Ok so I’m gonna divide the book into two parts; first being the lawyers’ fight and second being the adventure.

Lawyers’ fight was a little mundane to be honest. I was expecting some mind-blowing twists and revelations with all the lawyers’ brain at work, planning and plotting against their opponents but that didn’t happen. A lot of things were predictable that just ruined the fun of a thriller.

Adventure part was, in fact, interesting. I think I survived the book only because of that. I rushed through legal parts and waited for Nate O’Riley to come up. The picturisation was really good; I could actually see what Nate saw and feel what he felt.

Now, the ending was one of the few parts when the book actually felt like a thriller. I wasn’t expecting it. It came as a shock and how the events previously discussed were linked to it was brilliant.

❇️Overall, it was a passing read. Not boring but not as fun either. You can go for it if you have nothing good to read at the time. I’d call it a little better than average.

Author Special: Sidney Sheldon

If you have been following me for sometime then you must know that I am a big Sidney Sheldon fan. I just LOVE his books and pick one up wherever I see it. I have read 4 of his books so far and 1 is on my TBR. So, in this Author Special I will be talking about all the books (I know that’s a lot but I’m gonna try!) that he has written and how many movies have been made etc.

About Sidney Sheldon

Sidney Sheldon

Sidney Sheldon was an American writer and producer. Sheldon came to prominence in the 1930s, first working on Broadway plays and then in motion pictures, notably writing the successful comedy The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947) which earned him an Academy Award in 1948. He went on to work in television, where his works spanned a 20-year period. After turning 50, he began writing best-selling romantic suspense novels. His 18 novels have sold over 300 million copies in 51 languages. Sheldon is consistently cited as one of the top ten best selling fiction writers of all time.

He began writing as a youngster and at the age of ten he made his first sale of a poem for $10. At seventeen, he started working as a reader of prospective film material at Universal Pictures for $22 a week. At night he wrote his own screenplays and was able to sell one called “South of Panama,” to the studio for $250 in 1941.

In a 1982 interview Sheldon told of how he created his novels; “I try to write my books so the reader can’t put them down. I try to construct them so when the reader gets to the end of a chapter, he or she has to read just one more chapter.”
Explaining why so many women bought his books, he once commented that: “I like to write about women, who are talented and capable, but most important, retain their femininity. Women have tremendous power, their femininity, because men can’t do without it.”

TV and Movies

My top ten favourite sitcoms

1.F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

I mean, obviously! I have binge-watched it so many times that I have lost count. Despite being first aired in 1994, it never missed its mark. I laugh like a kid every time I watch the same episodes over and over again. The only bad thing about this show is that it ended too soon and we weren’t ready to lose Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Rachel, Ross and Joey!

2. The Big Bang Theory

I started this after being nudged too much by my best friend. To be honest, I wasn’t a fan during Season 1. But after that, I finished a season per day! It just takes a while to get the grasp of its humour because it’s a science fiction and I’m not big on that. But after a while it doesn’t even matter because you’re in love with characters and the plot.

3. How I met your Mother

First of all, I love Ted! I mean, he’s the nicest person ever. When I started the show I was comparing it with friends and I thought it’s not as good. But I soon realised it’s totally different and that’s when I fell in love with it. Although I would mention that the ending of the show is the most disappointing thing ever!!!

4. 2 Broke Girls

I watched this one on Comedy Central one day and I liked it. So I started this series and I loved it. Max is my spirit animal. She’s so cool! This show is a strict adult comedy. You won’t find it funny if you don’t like adult comedy. For those who do, it’s a hilarious show. It only has 6 seasons so as Max would say, “Don’t get too attached.”

5. Wizards of waverly place

Remember those good old days when shows like this were aired. I fell in love with Selena Gomez after this show. It always made me want to be a wizard (I know Harry Potter did it first but let’s not take away all credit from this). It’s a light hearted show for everyone!

6. Hannah Montana

Did nostalgia hit you yet? How can any of us forget the show we watched Miley Cyrus grow up in. Her double life, her friendships, relationships and everything just grips you in a hilarious world.

7. Modern Family

Again, I didn’t love it during the first 10 episodes because I was just introduced to the characters and was understanding the major theme of their storyline. By the end of season one, I was hooked to this show. I simply love this concept and its portrayal. A “modern family” that both, loves and hates each other. And that’s the reality of how things are which makes the show so relatable.

8. Mom

I am actually watching it currently. I am on season 4 and I am loving it. It is such a funny relationship of Mother and daughter and her daughter. Bonnie, Christie and Violet are all so similar yet different characters. Their combinations just makes you laugh so hard.

9. Young Sheldon

This is a prequel to The Big Bang Theory currently running it’s season 2. Why a particular character Sheldon you ask? Well, that you’ll know when you watch TBBT first. And do watch it first, it would be easy to follow then.

10. Young and Hungry

This one was also suggested to me by my best friend and I gotta say she gives good suggestions sometimes. It was so good to see Emily Osmet without Miley Cyrus. I mean, you get to see her in a kick-ass role. As for the show, it was super funny. I just loved it.

So there are the shows that made me laugh even when I didn’t want to. They made me happy when I was upset or stressed out. Are there any other sitcoms you like better? Tell me about them in the comment section below!

books

5 Books that I Unexpectedly Loved!

1.Till the last breath – Durjoy Datta

I don’t like romance. Durjoy Datta isn’t my favourive author either. But this book moved me to tears. This could’ve been because it was a long time ago or that I could relate to the lead character on some level. The bottom line is, I loved the book.

2. Number the Stars – Lois Lowry

I was just starting to read and I didn’t know where to look for good books so I just googled it and came across this gem. I didn’t know what to expect and maybe that’s what made me love the book and it’s lesson so much.

3. The Rosie Project – Graeme Simsion

As I’ve already mentioned a thousand times that I read it because of Bill Gates’ recommendation, I didn’t even read the synopsis and had no idea what the book is about. And I was caught by surprise when right from the first page my interest was high.

4. Bestseller – Ahmed Faiyaz

This one I received as a review copy and I had received a few by then (because it’s only been 3 months), and most of them were not so good. So I didn’t really expect much from this one either. But the book made me love it.

5. Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte

I don’t really like classics so this book being my favourite is huge. I was told that classics are must reads so I went on a shopping spree for them, which I regretted later when I couldn’t finish them. This one book made me rethink my interest in classics because I just never wanted it to be over.
